Anna Ulman of Hamtramck, Michigan - Loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, daughter, sister, in-law, niece and friend.

Anna Ulman (nee Borys), while convalescing at the home of her daughter, Carol Mahinske, near Birmingham, Alabama, died on Thursday, March 8, 2007 from complications due to diabetes. She was 84 years old.

Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred, Sr. who died in 1980. She is survived by four children: Reverend Stanley Ulman of Rochester Hills, Michigan, Carol (Ron) Mahinske of Hoover, Alabama, Alfred, Jr. (Lori) Ulman of Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii and Joseph Ulman of Hamtramck, Michigan, one grandson, Michael Mahinske, her sister, Sophie Basak, formerly of Hamtramck, Michigan now living in Prince Frederick, Maryland, in-laws Ludwig and Jadwiga Pikula of Sterling Heights, Michigan and many nephews, nieces and great nephews and great nieces.

In Alabama, visitation will be at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 4600 Moss Creek Boulevard, in Birmingham, Alabama, 35226, phone: (205) 822-9125, on Friday, March 9th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm with a memorial service beginning at 7pm.

In Michigan, visitation will be a the Jurkiewicz & Wilk Funeral Home, 2396 Caniff Street, in Hamtramck Michigan, 48212, phone: (313) 365-9600, on Sunday, March 11th from 12pm to 9pm. There will be a scripture service at 7pm.

The body will lie in state on Monday, March 12th at 10am at St. Ladislaus Catholic Church, 2730 Caniff Street, in Hamtramck followed by the funeral mass at 11am. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Detroit, Michigan. Anna will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Alfred Ulman, Sr.

Anna Ulman was born on May 4, 1922 in Detroit, Michigan to Polish immigrants, Andrew and Josephine Borys. She was a life long resident of Hamtramck where she graduated from St. Ladislaus Grade School (1937) and St. Ladislaus High School (1941). While a little girl she was a Polish Girl Scout.

Anna ran the family grocery store on Mitchell Street in Detroit. Anna helped with the Polish Relief Fund which provided aid for displaced persons after World War II. She was a bank teller at First Federal Savings and Loan and retired from her travel agency, Ulman Travel Agency, in 1996. All the while she was a full time mother and house wife.

She was a parishioner and Lector at Our Lady Queen of Apostles Parish in Hamtramck. Anna and Alfred, with the prodding of then parish pastor, Reverend Ted Blaszczyk, were the founding organizers of the Senior Citizens Club at Q of A. Later, when her eldest son, the Reverend Stanley Ulman, was appointed pastor of her old alma mater, Anna rejoined the St. Lads parish community. She was the coordinator of the St. Ladislaus Handcraft Group, member of the St. Ladislaus Rainbow Seniors, and the Rosary and Altar Society.

Anna was also member of the Daughters of Isabella, the Gold Star Mothers, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Orchard Lake Schools, the Moms and Dads Club of Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, the Polish Women’s Alliance, the Polish Roman Catholic Union and the Polish National Alliance. She was a financial secretary for PNA Lodge 2278.
